Senior Counsel The candidate will directly supervise and develop the work and careers of legal professiona! ls including attorneys. Will manage relationships and handle assignments involving a wide-variety of areas and disciplines within the organization, including handling of critical and significant corporate, financial and regulatory issues, litigation management and settlement negotiations for contestable claims and other high risk litigation matters, supervision of outside counsel. Provide input to executives and management on numerous projects by participating and sharing valuable insight, legal knowledge and advice on business issues, process and projects. Will be responsible for assessing significant risks and sharing those risk assessments with business partners, including senior leadership, executives and Board members in order to guide decision-making at the highest levels of the corporation.
The candidate should have current acceptance into the Missouri and/or Kansas Bar (preferably both). Must have 6+ years of litigation experience and 9 years of life insura! nce industry knowledge. Extremely strong oral and written comm! unication skills-including the ability to convey difficult messages are required. Should have a thorough and broad understanding of state and federal law pertaining to insurance, insurance regulation, litigation, claims, discovery (including electronic discovery) deceptive trade practices, fraud, underwriting, marketing, customer service, Telesales, Anti-Money Laundering, Patriot Act, trusts, intellectual property, corporate law and corporate secretary functions and procedures, bankruptcy, liens, garnishments, subpoenas, E-Signature, electronic filing, e-Commerce and Do Not Call laws and regulations. Must have in depth understanding of insurance industry and familiarity with regulation and litigation climate, product offerings, including life and annuity products. Thorough knowledge and understanding of industry regulatory and statutory history and changes. Should have knowledge of Microsoft Office, the Internet, Westlaw, Lexis, compliance databases and internet legal searc! h databases.
