MANDATE: This role is accountable for:
1) managing and controlling a portfolio of higher risk borrowing accounts o! riginated in the applicable P&C/PCG lines of business,
2) developing sound business practices to reduce the Bank's loss exposure in higher risk and/or higher dollar, more complex accounts,
3) enhancing the Bank's profitability by ensuring interest rates and fee revenues are commensurate with increased risk and intensive monitoring requirements;
4) representing the Bank as the source of expertise, both internally and externally, to the applicable banking groups, in dealing with escalating credit risk situations;
5) coordinating a team of various graded SAMU Account Managers in specific and assigned geographic region or line of business and ensuring the Relationship Managers maintain the required internal control standards, including adherence to audit, regulatory and compliance policies; and, 6) being the primary contact for the specific lines of business leaders and concurrence and organizing the credit activities related to the watch lis! t loans. This role provides prompt attention to deteriorating ! risk situations and minimizes the Bank's loan loss exposure and maximizes recoveries of principal, interest and costs.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY Portfolio Management Account Management Relationship Management Team Training Professional Development/Expertise / Leadership Role Portfolio Management Monitor performance of the assigned account portfolio under his/her functional supervision i.e. higher risk/higher dollar accounts, and more complex borrowing situations (specific industry and higher end market portfolio) within prescribed credit limits and as assigned by senior management. Utilize his/her management expertise and credit knowledge to resolve financially challenged accounts by returning them to acceptable risk levels or alternatively developing and pursuing an exit strategy within an acceptable time frame . Independently manage portfolio while providing appropriate updates and escalations to senior manager. Develop and implement existi! ng sound business practices to improve quality, liquidity and profitability in accordance with Bank policy. Account Management In consultation with Senior Manager Special Accounts, the Market Coordinator is accountable within the assigned portfolio for the successful negotiation and execution of account strategies with the objective of minimizing the Bank's exposure to loan losses and maximizing all recoveries, including respective professional fees & interest Complete detailed analysis and assessment of overall financial performance of all accounts. Develops alternative strategies and recommends appropriate action plans to Executives where appropriate, utilizing broad/diverse business knowledge and experience. Promptly assess security valuations and cash flow to determine any potential exposure or weaknesses in documentation and develop strategies to enhance the Bank's security position whenever warranted/available Develop and implement early action plans to minimize risk ! and the Bank's exposure, ensuring actions are both cost-effective and d! ynamic to evolving circumstances. Independently Negotiate action plans with debtor and guarantors. Complete timely and accurate reporting as required (i.e., quarterly and interim 959 reports, foreclosure lists, OREO reports, etc). Deal effectively with competing priorities and be able to sort out conflicting or ambiguous information and reach informed recommendations or decisions. Proactively monitor performance of borrower(s) v/s targets, deadlines and overall action plan initiatives, including the performance of any professionals employed. Initiate and support the decision making process, ensuring prompt escalation of any sensitive or substantive issues are communicated to Senior Manager. Relationship Management Develop and maintain co-operative and professional business relationships with customers, professional advisors and other interested parties through forthright communication and influential negotiations i.e. trust, openness, credibility. Act as the primary contact! for line of business leaders and concurrence and organize the credit activities related to the watch list loans. Establish working partnerships with P&C / PCG Relationship Managers and external clients by providing consultative and advisory support in developing work out solutions that offer maximum ability to maintain banking relationships. Maintain in depth product knowledge to support ability to cross sell and recommend appropriate bank products related to meet client needs. Team Training Coordinate a team of various graded SAMU Account Managers in specific and assigned geographic region or line of business. Provide coaching and on-the-job training for less experienced SAMU Account Managers. Utilize the buddy system for junior and new team members to provide advice and mentoring to other, less experienced direct reports through the portfolio management process. Actively participate in assigned projects as assigned, and ensure deadlines are met. Monitor and provide senio! r management updates as appropriate. Professional Development / Experti! se/ Leadership Role Participate in ongoing personal professional development. Keep current on financial services industry, new legislation and evolving case law as it impact security realization/insolvency related issues, and disseminate to his/her team. Share expertise with others, providing coaching and advice to others within SAMU as well as in the applicable banking groups, portfolio management groups and credit department. Develop and maintain effective, productive relationships with legal and insolvency professionals and other consultants/advisors within the commercial business community. Provide relief if required for the Senior Manager, Special Accounts. Act as Leadership exemplar / role model for US SAMU team, providing context, guidance and support to junior team members. Support overall Bank objectives and directives in driving improved results.
AUTHORITIES Credit Limit Authority as outlined on approved Credit Qualification and Discretionary Limit Matrix! . Authority to approve within assigned limits on BMO EZ Pay system for expense management oversight. SCOPE AND IMPACT This job minimizes the Bank's loan loss exposure and maximizing recoveries of principal, interest and costs. Portfolio Responsibilities: Portfolio consists of higher risk borrowing accounts, complex structured accounts and specific market segments (i.e. mid-market, commercial real estate, etc).
CROSS FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS This role has advising, monitoring, coordinating and service getting authorities. Role initiates work with and provides services/information to the following roles: External o Lawyers, Accountants & Insolvency Professionals o External Consultants (eg; Appraisers, Environmental, etc.) o Business Owners/Principals/Guarantors o CEO, CFO o Board of Directors o Other Lending Institutions Internal o Credit Department and Credit Concurrence o District Community Management, (Bank Presidents and Market Managers) /Relationship Managers, o! Other Bank Business Segment Managers (Operations, Internal Investigati! ons, Consumer Credit / Mortgage Lending Center)
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor of Science or equivalent in and/or M.B.A with a background in Business, Finance or Commerce preferred.
At least 5 years practical credit, operations and insolvency experience or equivalent. Knowledge:
This position requires Credit Qualification.
The incumbent must possess an in-depth level of Credit knowledge and skills and a working level of Portfolio Management knowledge and skills according to the standards established within the Credit Qualification Process Policies & Procedures.
Broad and extensive credit knowledge and skill, which includes loan interviewing, loan assessment and investigation, financial statement analysis, asset valuation, security evaluation, loan evaluation, negotiation, credit correspondence, loan supervision, and collection, including enforcing Creditor's ! rights.
Portfolio Management and reporting requirements. Skills: Strong leadership skills and capabilities.
Strong people management skills. In-depth credit and analytical skills.
Strong negotiation skills and ability to identify truly relevant matters.
Demonstrated ability to deal with a wide range of businesses and industries and to communicate effectively and represent the Bank professionally with various levels both internally and externally.
Ability to establish and maintain good customer relations and relationships with legal and insolvency community and other advisory individuals/groups e.g. appraisers, engineers.
