We are seeking a mid-level attorney who will be primarily responsible for managing claims and litigation and providing legal advice on clinical oper! ations and medical staff issues. This position will report to ! the Senior Vice President and General Counsel of SLHS. The ideal candidate will have litigation experience in a law firm setting and experience representing health care providers in connection with medical staff matters, medical staff governance, patient care matters, accreditation and licensing, state regulation of healthcare providers and other areas of healthcare law and regulation. As part of a small in house legal department, the Associate General Counsel will be expected to handle a wide variety of matters and work independently while maintaining close communication with the General Counsel and working collaboratively within the department and other internal and external parties.

Responsibilities :
Under the direction of the General Counsel, serve as primary in house legal counsel responsible for managing claims and litigation, including professional liability, general liability, EEOC claims and employment litigation, working closely with outside l! itigation counsel, hospital risk managers, and the VP for Insurance.
Manage discovery, document production and legal holds.
Direct responses to external investigations, reviews and inquiries that raise significant legal risk.
Provide legal advice and counsel on medical staff and clinical issues, including medical staff governance, patient care matters and licensing and accreditation; responsible for medical staff bylaws.
As needed, work with business teams to draft, review analyze and negotiate contracts, conduct and oversee legal research, serve as legal counsel to key hospital and health system committees and provide a variety of legal services to support the mission and business objectives of SLHS and its constituent entities.
Keep General Counsel and management apprised of significant developments.
Regularly interact with key management and outside counsel.
Develop and implement processes to improve the quality, efficiency and cost-effectiven! ess of in house legal services.

Requirements Superior academic! credentials, a high level of research, writing, analytical and oral communication skills, 4-8 years legal practice experience including litigation experience in a law firm setting ; experience representing healthcare clients in a law firm or in house environment. Ability to effectively manage claims and litigation for a large health care system; familiarity with the litigation process and best practices for managing investigations, claims, discovery, document production and litigation. Experience with clinical and medical staff issues. Substantive knowledge of federal and state healthcare laws and regulations and accreditation standards relevant to the candidate’s practice area, including Missouri and Kansas regulation of health care providers. Expertise in one or more of the following areas also is desirable: healthcare fraud and abuse, including the Stark Law, federal Anti-kickback Statute and False Claims Act; Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement; corporate transactions, i! ncluding physician arrangements; research contracting and research compliance; healthcare antitrust; information technology contracting, intellectual property; and HIPAA/HITECH. Must be highly organized and able to identify and analyze complex issues and develop creative solutions. Must be able to work independently and frequently without direct supervision, establish priorities while managing multiple projects and contribute positively to a collaborative team environment. Must have a strong customer service orientation. J.D. from an ABA accredited law school ; licensed to practice in at least one state and in good standing in all states where admitted to practice; MO/KS license preferred with expectation to become licensed in MO/KS if hired.
