This is semiskilled working independently for an 8 hour shift or more operating specialized refuse collection eq! uipment and performing routine maintenance on front-loading, roll-off refuse collection vehicles, and other specialized equipment used in the collection of refuse.

Work Performed

Navigates Class 8 (65,000 pounds) vehicles in all types of adverse weather conditions, including snow, ice, mud and fog. Will also operate vehicle at night and during summer temperatures of over 100 degrees and winter temperatures below 0 degrees. Services customer accounts requiring the use of specialized refuse collection equipment; operates front-end loader, roll-off truck, and other specialized equipment. Collects refuse, recyclables, and yard waste from dumpsters, barrels, carts and sidewalk receptacles and packs into collection vehicle; secures load to prevent litter. Collects recyclables from various drop-off locations; inspects collectibles for prohibited items; and sorts material for processing. Transports hazardous material. Operates keyboard to weigh and store vehicle i! nformation from deck scales. Demonstrates equipment used for r! ecycling and assists in educational programs. Walks route under various weather conditions, including snow, ice, mud and fog. Will also walk short distances at night. Grips/lifts/carries bundles and boxes weighing up to 50 pounds and 3-4 filled plastic refuse bags at a time from the curb line; places in the hopper of a truck with a 48" bed height. With assistance, lifts furniture and appliances from dead weight onto a bed of a pick-up with a 48" bed height. Unlocks tailgate on collection vehicles by pulling a turnbuckle or bar exerting up to 100 foot pounds of torque with hands only. Uses various hand tools such as drills, sanders, saws, washers, paint sprayers, etc.; metal working equipment to bond, cut and repair refuse containers of all sizes; and 2500-pound overhead winch/crane with electric over hydraulic controls to lift containers. Operates a 2-ton truck to move and relocate refuse containers. Monitors the cleanliness of drop off locations and drives to City Landfill! to unload vehicle as needed. Assists on other routes as required; operates rear-end loader as needed. Maintains vehicles operated including checking fluid levels with 4’ dipstick; washes and greases vehicle using grease gun, 12’ rolling ladder and mechanic’s creeper; changes 250 lb. tires in 20 minutes or less as necessary and requests maintenance and repair for vehicle as needed; assures proper working order of equipment. Makes special pickups, collects skips, and delivers refuse bags as needed or assigned. Maintains accurate reports for customer services, weights for refuse as well as recyclables. Works with customers to resolve collection issues. Fills out daily route sheets. Performs related duties as needed or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of the tenth grade and two years of experience operating a variety of refuse collection vehicles; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which would provide the following know! ledge, skills, and abilities: Considerable knowledge of safety standard! s and precautions relating to the operation of Class 8 vehicles and the loading and disposal of refuse and trash. Considerable knowledge of and ability to perform routine vehicle maintenance on large vehicles. Ability to perform heavy manual labor and keep mentally alert for periods up to 16 hours; and lift dead weight up to 100 lbs. chest high to place inside or on truck. Must have strength and motor dexterity to change a 250 pound tire in 20 minutes or less using tools to assist, such as pneumatic impact wrench, air assisted hydraulic jack, and dual wheel dolly. Must have stamina to withstand up to 16 hours of continuous operation of a Class 8 vehicle, from right and left hand side of collection vehicle, twisting body torso up to 90 degrees while pushing with 50 pounds of pressure and holding in clutch pedal and working levers to operate hydraulic accessories. Must have dexterity and motor skills to allow the operation of a 101 keyboard for each round trip to the landfill! . Ability to ride on a 10″×18″ platform on the rear of a refuse truck stepping up on and off up to 600 times daily and riding on a platform for short distances at speeds up to 30 miles per hour while holding onto 1" steel grab handles. Ability to withstand temperatures above 100 degrees and below 0 degrees while performing strenuous labor for 60 minutes. Ability to navigate Class 8 vehicle and walk route at night and in all types of adverse weather conditions, such as mud, snow, ice and fog. Ability to grip/lift/carry bundles and boxes weighing up to 50 pounds and 3-4 filled plastic refuse bags at a time from the curb line; and place in the hopper of a truck with a 48" bed height. With assistance, ability to lift furniture and appliances from dead weight, and place on to bed of a pick-up with a 48" bed height. Must have the dexterity to check fluid levels such as engine oil, transmission oil, power steering, etc. on vehicles with use of 4’ dipstick. Ability to push t! rash containers on wheels weighing 500 pounds approximately 15’ on ha! rd, level, and uneven surface and during various weather conditions. May push over 200 containers daily. Ability to use grease gun to lubricate vehicle’s chassis and body on a routine schedule which will include use of 12’ rolling ladder, mechanic’s creeper and climbing, bending and twisting, in, on top of, under and around vehicles. Ability to push and pull levers overhead to lock and unlock large doors; reach high and climb on roll-off equipment to secure loads; and enter/exit the cab of truck/refuse body through a 3′×3′ door located 6’ from ground level on a frequent basis. Requires wide peripheral vision/depth perception to permit safe use of mirrors for backing distances up to 1/4 mile; and to judge distances from side, front and rear of motor vehicle. Ability to work while wearing protective clothing and safety equipment such as raincoat, safety vest, safety glasses and/or goggles, steel toe shoes and respirator in all types of weather. Ability to reach i! nto container with 45" access height to remove bags, boxes, refuse, etc. Ability to twist body while in seated position and safely/effectively maneuver specialized refuse collection vehicles and equipment in traffic and in restrictive spaces. Ability to grip and pull with up to 100 foot pounds of torque, a steel cable 1" in diameter for the purpose of roll-off related activities. Must have the dexterity to connect an electrical twist-lock connector requiring up to 25 lbs. torque in 30 seconds or less; operate screw turnbuckle weighing up to 100 lbs. and requiring 100 foot pounds of torque to operate; and couple/uncouple hydraulic lines using hydraulic quick couplings that require up to 75 lbs. of force in 60 seconds or less for each line connected. Requires the mental skill, patience and motor dexterity to open combination locks in all types of weather, for example, at nighttime in sleet at 34 degrees Fahrenheit using light from headlights of a motor vehicle. Must have the ! motor dexterity to place plastic liner into trash container inside of m! olded concrete sidewalk receptacle while bending over at a 90 degree angle to container while folding top of liner over outside of container with a maximum of 4’ clearance with minimum light and with no assistance. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively using two-way radio. Ability to work cooperatively with co-workers and the general public. Excellent work history and attendance record. Possess and maintain a valid Missouri Commercial Driver’s License, Class B with air brake endorsement and an excellent driving record.
