Description
Saint Luke’s Health System (SLHS), a not-for-profit, locally owned, faith-based, fully aligned health system in existence since Saint Luke’s Hospital opened in 1882, is seeking to expand its in house legal department through the addition of several well-qualified attorneys. SLHS has experienced significant growth over the last several years. The health system currently consists of eleven hospitals and related health services in the Kansas City area and surrounding region. The primary service area covers 7 metropolitan counties, and the regional service areas comprise 60 counties up to 120 miles from Kansas City. We are seeki! ng candidates with a broad mix of skill sets to fill several positions at the Associate General Counsel level. This position will report to the newly established position of Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Saint Luke’s Health System, provide primary support to a number of internal departments and have primary responsibility for in house legal services in one or more functional practice areas. As part of a small in house legal department, the Associate General Counsel will be expected to handle a wide variety of matters and work independently while maintaining close communication with the General Counsel and working collaboratively with other members of the department and with internal clients.
Responsibilities :
Under the direction of the General Counsel, serve as primary corporate in house legal counsel for one or more assigned SLHS departments, entities and substantive practice areas with responsibility for managing work in those areas Provide legal advice and counsel on business and regulatory matters, work with business teams to draft, review analyze and negotiate contracts, conduct and oversee legal research, serve as legal counsel to key hospital and health system committees and provide a variety of corporate legal services to support the mission and business objectives of SLHS and its constituent entities
Keep General Counsel and management apprised of significant legal issues and developments
Regularly interact with key management and outside counsel
Actively support the SLHS corporate compliance program by demonstrating a fundamental grasp of legal requirements and compliance program principles, objectives and processes
Develop and implement processes to improve the quality, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of in house legal support services
Requirements
The successful candidate will have superior academic credentials, a high level of research, writing, analyti! cal and oral communication skills, 4-8 years legal practice experience ! working successfully with healthcare clients in a law firm or in house environment, and substantive knowledge of and interest in practicing primarily in one of the following practice areas: corporate transactions and general contracts, healthcare compliance and regulatory matters, and healthcare transactions including physician arrangements.
Expertise in a number of the following substantive areas, as relevant to the candidate’s practice area, is desirable: healthcare fraud and abuse, including the Stark Law, federal Anti-kickback Statute and False Claims Act; Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement; Missouri and Kansas corporate law and regulation of healthcare providers; corporate transactions, including physician arrangements; medical staff governance; health care regulations; research contracting and research compliance; compliance investigations; healthcare antitrust; information technology contracting; intellectual property; and HIPAA/HITECH
Must be highly organized! and able to identify and analyze complex issues and develop creative solutions;
Must be able to work independently and frequently without direct supervision, establish priorities while managing multiple projects and contribute positively to a collaborative team environment
Must have a strong customer service orientation and a high level of personal integrity
J.D. from an ABA accredited law school ; licensed to practice in at least one state and in good standing in all states where admitted to practice; MO/KS license preferred with expectation to become licensed in MO/KS if hired
