Summary: Performs a variety of laboratory procedures associated with the examination of histologi! cal specimens to include clerical activities. Prepares and stains tissue sections from surgical or autopsy materials for microscopic study and interpretation. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values.

Principle Accountabilities: % Of Time Spent

1. Safety/Risk Management: Maintains an environment for employees, patients, medical staff, and visitors that promote safety consciousness in order to achieve a safe physical environment. Complies with Infection Control guidelines. Adheres to chemical hygiene policies. Follows confidentiality policy/procedure. Adheres to hospital wide and department specific safety regulations. Writes QI reports as necessary. Creates a safe and clean work environment. (10%)

2. Coordination of Services: coordinates activities, which allow quality work within a timely manner.Receives, logs and prepares specimens. Coordinates services and resources with labora! tory and non-laboratory personnel (i.e. surgery, mislabeled/un! labeled specimens, supplies). Coordinates completion of training (i.e., new employees). Acts as a resource for laboratory and non-laboratory personnel. Monitors and orders reagents, supplies and consumables in a timely manner to insure continuous service. Stocks area and alerts appropriate personnel when reagents or supplies are low. Receives, labels and stores supplies accurately and in a timely manner. (10%)

3. Primary Aspects of the Job: exhibits organizational skills and a conscientiousness which allows for precise and accurate results in a timely manner. Demonstrates proper technical skills (i.e. embedding, cutting and labeling). Demonstrates proper time management skills and priority setting. Assists in gross room activities. Cuts frozen sections. Performs computer functions. Assists pathologist. Accessions cases into LIS or appropriate logs. Performs routine and special stains. Performs immunochemistry stains. Performs immunofluorescence stains. Perfo! rms muscle enzyme studies. Prepares solutions. Prepares dilutions. Works up antibodies for immunochemistry stains. Selects proper controls. Evaluates results. Coverslips slides properly. Processes bones (i.e. decal). Recognizes and solves problems. Identifies cause, judges alternatives and implements solutions. Performs quality control and equipment maintenance. Evaluates accuracy of results and proper functioning of instruments and reagents through the use of established quality control program. Researches and retrieves appropriate tissue for control blocks. Maintains proper quality control slides and records. Documents corrective action for quality control program. Maintains instruments by use of preventive maintenance procedures (i.e. water bath, microtome, tissue processor, automated coverslip, knives, etc). Performs troubleshooting on equipment and supplies. Assists pathologist with autopsy procedures. Assists in special projects. Acts as a resource for a/an instrument! , procedure and/or specialty area as assigned. (45%)

4. Com! munication Management: maintains good quality relations between staff, patients, physicians and other departments to promote a good working environment.Uses appropriate interpersonal and customer service skills when dealing with peers, pathologists, physicians and management. Trains co-workers and non-laboratory personnel. Educates students. Remains current with meeting minutes. Reviews area policies and procedures annually. (25%)

5. Technology: Maintains equipment in order to provide a continuous level of quality in test results. Reports instrument malfunctions and performs minor repairs. Calls service representative or technical hot-line as necessary. Maintains a working knowledge of laboratory computer functions to insure accurate data management. Maintains a working knowledge of the hospital computer functions to include charges and credits, if applicable. Maintains a working knowledge of personal computer, if applicable. Attends in-service training ! on new equipment and procedures (i.e., WinNet). Assists in evaluating and testing new equipment. Remains current in Laboratory developments though participation in continuing education and self-study (10 hours per year). Performs other work duties as assigned. (10%)

Required Experience:
HTL (ASCP) certification required. MOHS experience preferred.

Position requires a high degree of accuracy to ensure proper identification of tissue sections and slides. Incorrect diagnosis of cancer may be given for a patient resulting in unnecessary or missed surgery and financial loss.

Must meet all applicable required state and federal standards to perform assigned testing

The assessment, care and treatment provided by the Laboratory will be consistent with the specific age related needs of the patient. The Laboratory divisions are competent to provide patient care to neonates/infants, children, adolescents, adults and! geriatrics.

Required Education:
Bachelor's degree ! required..

HTL (ASCP) cerification required.

Employee is required to stand occasionally; sit and walk frequently. Employee must occasionally lift or carry Lightweight items up to a max of 20#. Employee is required to reach forward frequently. Employee is required to occasionally bend, squat and reach overhead. For repetitive action, employee is required to use both hands for simple grasping and fine manipulation. Employee is generally not required to use foot controls. Position exposes incumbent to noxious fumes, infectious diseases, carcinogenic agents (Formalin) and sharp instruments (microtome knives). Employee in this job class has frequent exposure to xylene. Employee is frequently exposed to blood borne pathogens. Employee is occasionally exposed to noise, dust and CRT terminal work.

The most significant of! duties are included but this does not exclude occasional work assignments not mentioned or developmental duties.
