The Director of International Development Partnerships will be responsible for building support with key stakeholders in the development community for the role of Monsanto and our technology to contribute to Sustainable Agriculture and food security.

Through the development and execution of public-private partnerships, the Director will shape the vision for Monsanto’s role in sustainable agriculture and hunger alleviation to earn good will and trust for the company, improve acceptance of our products and technology, and protect and create our business opportunities around the world.

Responsibilities

Building and utilizing key relationships and networks:
The Director will build and maintain strong networks and relationships with the external development community, political leaders and thought leaders to build vocal support for the role of Monsanto’s business and technology in hunger alleviation and food security. He/she will engage in policy-shaping initiatives and will build support to protect and promote a positive business enabling environment.

The Director will provide internal leadership to Monsanto’s teams on development issues associated with Monsanto’s products and partnerships and will work with other functions across the company including Technology, Public Affairs, Government Affairs, the Commercial Business and others to manage and leverage existing and new public-private partnerships.

Managing and leveraging Public Private Partnerships:
The Director will lead Monsanto’s Beachell-Borlaug International Scholarship Program to engage key stakeholders in the Rice and Wheat arenas including interaction with the external panel of expert judges, overseeing administration of the program and review of student applications, advertising and development of promotional materials, media outreach and the announcement of the winner at the World Food Prize event.

The Director will manage Monsanto’s commitment to business investment and public-private partnerships in sub-Saharan Africa including:

  • Lead Monsanto’s participation in industry platforms such as the World Economic Forum Grow Africa initiative to identify business opportunities and promote business enabling policy environments in various countries.
  • Lead Monsanto’s financial and knowledge contribution to the Virus Resistant Cassava Project with key public sector research institutions.
  • Engage in the Water Efficient Maize for Africa (WEMA) project to support the WEMA Partnership Lead and raise awareness of the project.
The Director will also lead the Technology Transfer “sharing” element of the Monsanto pledge, in coordination with the Technology Strategy Lead, to ensure appropriate management of our existing technology sharing projects and respond to external requests for new sharing projects.

Creating and seizing new opportunities for leadership:
The Director will understand Monsanto’s role and the role of other companies in sustainable agricultural development, and will position Monsanto a leader is Sustainable Agriculture, poverty reduction and hunger alleviation.

The Director will drive a proactive communication strategy with internal and external stakeholders on the impact of Monsanto products and partnerships to improve smallholder farmer economic development.

Responsiveness to external stakeholders, issues and obstacles: The Director will understand the roles and missions of external agencies, foundations, institutions, NGO’s, governments and others in the development community and how they relate to Monsanto’s goals. He/she will use this understanding to effectively negotiate sound and workable partnerships and responses to issues and challenges that affect both the programs and Monsanto’s business.

The Director will also understand key policy issues affecting business growth in developing countries and will work to promote and protect business enabling policy environments exist to support Monsanto’s goals. Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required and at least five years of experience working in agriculture or international trade or development.
  • Must have flexibility to travel internationally for up to two weeks duration and approximately 20 - 25% of time.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.

PreferredSkills/Experience

  • Understanding of developing country issues affecting business. Experience with smallholder farmers in developing countries preferred.
  • Demonstrated excellence in motivating people and managing project/team budgets.
  • Results orientation with ability to deliver on short-term goals while simultaneously advancing longer-term strategy and goals.
