This mission centered full-time position is responsible for management of the accounting department including all financial and management accounting, reporting, and budgets. This position manages accounting activities including internal controls, daily entries, account maintenance, cash management/banking, financial analysis and reporting, fixed asset maintenance, year-end audit preparation and the support of budget and forecasting activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the security, integrity, and accuracy of all financial transactions, systems, and system ! entries.
  • Maintains industry-standard level accounting! controls and assists in defining accounting policies and procedures.
  • Ensures the accuracy of data and adherence of the system to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Minimizes risk by understanding current and proposed legislation affecting our organization; enforcing accounting policies; and recommending new procedures.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures. Maintains an accounting department “How To” manual.
  • Maintains the general ledger and chart of accounts structure of the organization.
  • Ensures accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year end reporting of all monthly financial information and closing of books. Ensures accurate and timely financial statements are produced by the 15th of each month.
  • Assists the CAO regarding banking and investment management. Reconciles bank accounts monthly.
  • Supports budgeting and forecasting activities! to ensure prudent expenditure of funds. Analyzes budget variances; initiates corrective actions.
  • Identifies and computes accruals, applies accounting principles to transactions and recommends revisions in departmental accounting procedures.
  • Advises staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding financial data, special reporting requests, and similar issues.
  • Works with the CAO to ensure a clean and timely year end audit. Coordinates the annual independent audit including preparing financial statements which may be audited.
  • Works with external auditors to sporadically audit departmental accounting data and identify and correct errors.
  • Ensures the general ledger and chart of accounts are consistent with the Unified Chart of Accounts (UCOA) setup for nonprofit organizations. Collaborates with other partner Eye Banks as necessary.
  • Ensures that the accounting syste! m is working properly at all times, is backed up daily, and contains no! duplication of information.
  • Supports the CAO with special projects and workflow process improvements.
  • Works with external accountants and CAO to timely and accurately file governmental forms and reports, such as Form 990, necessary to comply with State law and Federal regulations for audits of 501(C)3 organizations and recipients of grants.
  • Analyzes accounting policies and procedures updates as necessary.
  • Assists CAO with insurance, benefits, leases, and other financial analyses.
  • Assists CAO in developing RFPs and obtaining competitor bids.
  • Facilitates all insurance related claims by working with insurance carriers.
  • Maintains the fixed asset inventory system.
  • Maintains pertinent business and accounting records as prescribed by law or industry standard.
  • Works with other departments to analyze workflow to develop more efficient use of resources.
  • Develops and implements new procedures to! enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the accounting department.
  • Supervises accounting staff and is responsible for managing the team to ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Provides training to new and existing staff as needed.
  • Handles department personnel issues relating to staff conflicts, absenteeism, performance issues, etc.
  • Works with each direct report to establish goals and objectives for each year and monitors and advises the CAO on the progress to enhance the professional development of staff.
  • Assists the CAO and HR department with benefits management.
  • Complies with the professional standards of the most current American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Code of Professional Conduct, including the most current AICPA Interpretations of the Code of Professional Standards.
  • Protects organization's value by keeping information confident! ial.
  • Other accounting related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting from an accredited institution (see link: http://www.ets.org/highered/accrediting ) or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been acquired is required.
  • CPA certification a plus.
  • Continual training and certification necessary. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE:
  • A minimum five (5) years accounting experience required.
  • A minimum of two (2) years in a supervisory role an accounting department and/or related leadership / management experience required.
  • Experience with accrual based accounting methods required.
  • Knowledge of GAAP related to nonprofit organizations is strongly preferred.
  • He! althcare industry and/or nonprofit experience is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge and experience using accounting and budgeting programs such as QuickBooks, Dynamics, etc. required.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office is required, particularly Excel and Access.
  • Extensive experience with data analysis and spreadsheet calculations is required.
  • Ability to think strategically and plan work around attaining goals and objectives.
  • This position will have contact with attorneys, bakers, external accountants / auditors, and the firm’s Executive Leadership Team (ELT) which requires strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong organizational skills, problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Strong leadership skills, ability to facilitate work teams.
  • Ability to work independently, with limited direction, and in a team environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and abi! lity to work with distraction and to multi-task.
  • Must maintain! a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record as determined by Foundation.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to travel throughout service region as required.
  • Driving for extended periods or long distances may be required.
  • Frequent periods of intense concentration, attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to handle mental and physical strain involved in use of printed materials and prolonged use of computer screens.
  • Moderate manual dexterity for basic keyboarding.
  • Long periods of sitting and/or standing may be required.
  • Ability to lift and move more than 25 pounds.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

  • Normal office environment combined with normal outdoor exposures
