Senior Claims Examiner The candidate will initiate the investigation of new claims, make liability decisions, and ev! aluate and negotiate settlements of high risk, high exposure Bodily Injury and Property Damage claims. Will understand and apply state specific law and regulations in highly litigious venues across the country. Review each claim for coverage issues, utilize coverage attorney opinions, and work with supervisors to resolve. Assist other departments with policy and coverage questions. Establish reserve setting in accordance with company policy. Complete Bodily Injury and Property Damage Evaluation Forms and make recommendations for the disposition of claims in excess of individual settlement authority. Refer lawsuits to properly approved defense attorneys, and direct their handling, including the authorization of discovery actions and motions practice. Review, audit and pay invoices of independent adjusters, defense experts, attorneys, and other vendors in timely manner. Summarize large losses, and present findings to upper management, reinsurers and other appropriate departme! nts. Document claim file notes clearly, with all communication! s and activities that occur during handling of the claim, using factual and objective information. Maintain a current 30-day diary on all open claims. Attend mediations, depositions, and trials, as required in various jurisdictions across the country. Obtain/maintain a non-resident adjuster license and/or bar membership in various states. Assist the claims supervisor in training new hires, enabling them to learn the claims system and departmental procedures. Act as a mentor to the claims staff. Manage 24 hour hotline one week a month and upon receipt of an after-hours call, responsible for facilitating rapid response team including: dispatching to the scene our local counsel, an independent adjuster, an accident reconstructionist, and an environmental clean-up technician, as necessary. Other duties as assigned by the claims supervisor.

The candidate should have Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years of experience handling complex coverage investigations and high exposure ! physical damage and auto liability claims, including litigated files, or equivalent experience. Law degree is preferred. Background in insurance defense is a plus. Commercial auto, general liability and multi-state experience are helpful. Claims designation and/or state licensing are a plus. Knowledge of insurance coverage issues a plus. Ability to compose professional letters, e-mails, reports, and comprehensive file notes is needed. Should have ability to speak effectively with vendors, customers, claimants, attorneys, and upper management. Ability to establish a rapport and communicate with insureds regarding claim handling, liability decisions, reserves, and settlements is required. Should have working knowledge of Microsoft Office. Experience strongly preferred in Word, Excel and Outlook Express. General knowledge of internet use, search functions, and research is needed. General knowledge of Westlaw is a plus. Must be able to interpret policies, perform analytical res! earch and investigations, and make sound judgments from data and record! s collected. Must have strong analytical and reasoning skills.
