Job Description
Summary of Position:
The Customer Service I position is responsible for responding to a variety of from members and their dependents, hospitals, providers, attorneys and agents. The incumbent will need to interpret multiple contracts in response to benefit and claim inquiries. Researches membership database and billing history to resolve membership issues.
Essential Accountabilities â" Other duties may be assigned:
EACH DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITY MUST BE PERFORMED IN ACCORDANCE WITH INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE SCORECARD INQUIRY AND QUALITY STANDARDS.
Level 1 (Trainee)
- Attends and successfully completes designated Customer Service training programs and assessments. An employee must demonstrate proficiency in the duties and responsibilities listed under Level 2 for four months after the completion of Level 1 training before being moved to Level 2.
- Receives and responds to telephone calls, letters or walk-in customers.
- Enters record of inquiries and related correspondence in computerized tracking system.
- Researches policy information and membership records to resolve issues.
- Composes both verbal and written responses to inquiries.
- For FEP positions, must complete additional FEP training program for FEP system and procedures.

Reading
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating instructions, handbooks, and procedure manuals. (Both levels)
- Ability to compose simple and tactful correspondence. (Both levels)
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, providers and other employees of the organization. (Both levels)
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers and decimals.
- Ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages. (Both levels)
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written and oral or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in routine, standard situations. (Both levels)
Knowledge and Skills:
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Windows
- Beginning level of skill with Microsoft Word
- Previous experience with on-line customer service applications helpful. (Both levels)
- Medical terminology is preferred. (Level 1)
- Must complete Customer Service training program (assessed at 90%) which includes FACETS, product knowledge, inquiry documentation and telephone skills.
- For FEP, must also successfully complete additional FEP training programs. (Level 2)
High school diploma or general education degree (1 year certificate from college or technical school is preferred), and 2 years of previous customer service, member services, or claims processing experience; or any combination of education and experience providing the types and levels of knowledge, skills, and abilities required by the job. For level 2, an employee must demonstrate proficiency in the duties and responsibilities listed under Level 2 for four months after the completion of Level 1 training before being moved to Level 2.

Requires the ability to speak and hear clearly in person or via the telephone. Position requires repetitive motion using a computer keyboard. Employee may occasionally be required to lift light boxes of materials weighing up to 20 - 25 pounds.
